Guwahati Airport to Shillong: Shared Taxi vs Cab vs Bus (2026)

Shared taxi, private cab and bus compared for the Guwahati Airport to Shillong transfer, shown on a beautiful hill road- AI modified for privacy.

You have just landed, your bags are out, and Shillong is 120 km uphill. Now, the “ next TEN minutes” decide how the rest of the day goes.

Rail does not reach Shillong, so the Guwahati Airport to Shillong transfer comes down to three choices: a shared taxi, a private cab or a bus. Each differs in price, waiting time and drop point.

The three-hour climb into the hills only goes smoothly if the ride suits you. If it doesn’t, you’ll feel it fast: a long wait for a car to fill, a fare higher than you planned, or a drop-off miles from your hotel.

So here is the short answer on how to reach Shillong from Guwahati Airport:

  • Travelling alone and landing in daylight? A shared taxi is the best-value way to go straight from the airport.
  • A group of four, heavy bags, or a late landing? Book a private cab in advance.
  • Light bags and spare time? The bus can work. Goibibo lists one MTC service from the airport around 11 am. The rest start in Guwahati city, so confirm the timing before you land.

Fares, timings, and the traps that catch first-time visitors are all ahead. But let’s deal with the drive first. Once you know how long it really takes, every other choice gets easier.

How Far is Shillong From Guwahati Airport?

The NH6 route from Guwahati Airport to Shillong: about 120 km and roughly three hours. AI modified for privacy, map not to scale.

Shillong is about 120 km from Guwahati Airport, and the drive takes roughly three hours on NH6, longer in heavy traffic or bad weather.

It looks short on the map, and that’s the trap. You’re climbing from the Brahmaputra plains, about 50 m above sea level, all the way up to Shillong at roughly 1,500 m. Past Jorabat the hills begin, and the road starts to twist. The hills don’t have to look steep to slow you down. The bends do that on their own.

This also explains why you will see different distances online, from 98 to 128 km. Most of the gap is where the count starts. The airport sits about 25 km outside the city, according to Wizzride, so a number measured from central Guwahati will always look smaller than one measured from the airport.

Time is less fixed than distance. Operators quote 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and one cab company says Friday evenings and long weekends can add up to an hour. Our own Guwahati to Shillong road trip guide lands on 2.5 to 3 hours as well, with Nongpoh and Umiam Lake as the usual stops.

So plan on three hours of road, plus the time it takes to find your ride. That total decides which option suits you, which is what the next section compares.

Shared Taxi vs Private Cab vs Bus At A Glance

A bus seat can start near ₹200. A private cab can cost ₹4,500 or more for the whole car. The shared taxi sits between them, with a catch of its own. Here is how the three compare on cost, waiting time and where you are dropped, so you can choose before you land.

Can You Get a Shared Taxi From Guwahati Airport to Shillong?

Illustration of a traveller with a suitcase choosing between two shared taxis outside an airport at sunset
Two kinds of shared taxi: a pre-booked Innova-style seat and a classic sumo-style car. AI modified for privacy – illustrative scene, not the actual airport.

Yes, but “shared taxi” covers two very different services, and the gap between them is the real decision.

The pre-booked seat from the airport. Operators such as Wizzride sell single seats in a shared Innova Crysta, from about ₹900 a seat. Departures run on a fixed schedule, with designated pickup and drop points. Wizzride offers pre-booked shared seats from Guwahati Airport. Check your booking confirmation for the exact pickup point and follow the operator’s instructions before leaving the terminal. Wizzride’s FAQ says driver and vehicle details arrive by SMS and WhatsApp about 1 to 1.5 hours before departure, so keep your phone on and reachable. The car leaves on time even if only one seat is booked, and the operator’s FAQ says it generally waits about 15 minutes past the pickup time. If your flight runs late, you reschedule in the app, subject to availability and a possible charge.

Don’t assume the driver will hold the car for your flight. Luggage is capped as well, at one trolley bag up to 15 kg and one cabin bag up to 7 kg per person. The whole fare is payable at booking, and cancelling close to departure can leave you with no refund.

The street sumo from Paltan Bazar. This is the old-school version. A seat costs ₹350 to ₹500, six or seven passengers share the car, and there is no timetable. It leaves when it is full. It also starts in the city, more than 20 km from the airport, so you pay for a ride in and then go looking for the stand with your bags. Luggage space is tight.

Look at the whole trip before you pick the cheaper fare. The city sumo can work out cheaper, but you’ll need to travel from the airport to Paltan Bazar first. Check a ride-hailing app for the current fare, then add that cost to the shared seat before comparing the total. Once you add the sumo’s ₹350 to ₹500, the total can land close to, or even above, what the pre-booked seat costs. You also spend an extra hour or more getting there and waiting for the car to fill. The city sumo only wins if you find a cheaper way into the city and have time to spare.

The budget way into the city. There is one cheaper way to reach Paltan Bazar: the ASTC airport bus. Published fares run at roughly ₹100 to ₹150, depending on the source, which is several hundred rupees less than an app cab. The trade-off is time and effort. The ride can take 60 to 90 minutes, you wait for the next scheduled departure, and you then carry your bags to the sumo stand. It only suits a daytime landing with hours to spare. Confirm the current timings and fare with ASTC before you rely on it.

Some travellers board at Khanapara instead, which sits on the Shillong side of Guwahati. From the airport, the bypass road is said to reach it without cutting through the city centre, and cars leaving Paltan Bazar pass through it anyway. Like the city stands, though, it runs mainly by day and gets scarce after dark, so ask your hotel or a driver whether cars load there at your hour before you count on it.

Before you pay for either, confirm two things:

  • Is the price per seat or for the whole car?
  • Where will you be dropped? A city sumo typically ends at Police Bazar. A pre-booked seat uses a designated drop point, which may not be your hotel, so check it in your booking.

Evening is where shared travel gets shaky. Older forum posts disagree on how late walk-up cars run, so don’t plan around finding a seat after dark. Pre-booked seats follow fixed departures, so check the last one listed for your date. If you land later than that, switch to a private cab.

That brings us to the second option. For groups, and for late arrivals, it may cost less than it looks.

How Much Is a Private Cab From Guwahati Airport to Shillong?

Quotes for the whole car start at about ₹2,500 and run to ₹4,500 or more. A bigger vehicle, such as an Innova, or a different way of booking can push the price higher.

A private cab is priced per car, so the sums change with every extra passenger. Wizzride, for example, lists a hatchback from about ₹2,800, a sedan from about ₹3,200 and an SUV from about ₹4,200. If it’s just you, or you and one other person, that fare feels steep next to a ₹900 seat. Add a third or fourth traveller and it looks very different. You split the cost, and the car waits for you and stops right at your hotel door.

Hatchbacks and sedans sit at the lower end of the range. SUVs and Innovas cost more. App prices also move with demand, so a listing you saw last week may not match tonight’s quote.

You can book a private cab three ways:

  • Pre-book with an operator. You get a driver’s name and number before you land, and the car is waiting at arrivals. Waiting time differs by operator, so ask. One Shillong company advertises two free hours, while Wizzride’s FAQ mentions about an hour of flexibility if you warn them early.
  • Use the prepaid counter at arrivals. Published travel guidance estimates a sedan fare of around ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 for the journey to Shillong, and the queue and booking process can take 20 to 30 minutes. Rates can change, so confirm the current fare and any night surcharge at the counter before you travel.
  • Book an intercity ride on an app such as Uber. It is quick to arrange, but the price can shift with demand. Check the quote again close to landing.

Whichever route you choose, ask three questions before you pay:

  • Are tolls included in the fare?
  • How long will the driver wait if your flight is late?
  • Where exactly will you be dropped?

A fixed total agreed before the engine starts beats a price negotiated at the kerb, especially after dark. And if you travel light, alone, and can spare an afternoon, there is a cheaper option still. It comes with its own catch, which starts before you ever leave the airport.

Can You Take a Bus from Guwahati Airport to Shillong?

Yes, there is a direct MTC bus listed from Guwahati Airport to Shillong, but it is a limited daytime option.

Goibibo lists one Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) service departing from the Airport Bus Stand at around 11 am. The listed fare is approximately ₹500, and the journey takes about three hours, with drop-off at Police Bazar Stand in Shillong. Check the Goibibo bus listing for your travel date before setting out, as bus availability, timings and fares can change.

Buses from Guwahati city are another option. MakeMyTrip lists MTC services from around 7 am to 5 pm, with fares starting at approximately ₹200. Boarding points include ASTC Paltan Bazar, ISBT Guwahati and Khanapara. However, these services require you to travel from the airport into Guwahati first, adding extra time and transport costs.

The direct airport bus may suit travellers with light luggage who arrive early enough to catch the service. If you land later in the day, confirm your onward transport in advance rather than relying on this bus.

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • Solo, daytime landing, and want a direct ride from the airport: Shared taxi.
  • Couple on a first visit: Private cab. The extra cost buys certainty on day one.
  • Group of four: A private sedan from about ₹3,200 comes in under four shared seats at about ₹3,600. Bags get tight in a sedan, so an SUV from about ₹4,200 is the roomier pick.
  • Group of three: Three shared seats come to about ₹2,700, close to a sedan at ₹3,200. Compare live quotes before you decide.
  • Heavy luggage or children: Private cab. Shared cabs cap bags per person.
  • Evening or night landing: Private cab, pre-booked.
  • Light bags and spare time: The bus, either the daytime airport service or a city bus.

Somewhere around three or four travellers, a private cab stops looking expensive.

Where Will You Be Dropped in Shillong?

It depends on the vehicle. A private cab goes to your hotel door. A shared car uses designated stops, so ask which one you will get. Buses vary. MTC buses mainly end at Police Bazar, the central terminal, and redBus also lists Barik Point and Mawiong ISBT as drop points. Mawiong ISBT sits on the city’s edge and is often used by long-distance coaches. Confirm the stop when you buy your ticket.

Then check how far that stop is from your stay. A cheap seat that ends far from your hotel is not cheap. Shillong is hilly, and a short ride from a stand adds up with bags. If you are still choosing among hotels in Shillong, check how far each one is from the stand, and read recent guest reviews for notes on access and parking.

Count the last stretch in your budget too. If a shared seat or a bus leaves you at a stand, you still need a local taxi to your hotel. Some shared operators offer an extended drop for an extra charge on selected routes, so check the booking page. Your hotel can tell you what that last ride usually costs.

What If Your Flight Lands Late at Night?

If your flight lands after dark, don’t expect a shared seat to be waiting. Older forum posts disagree about how late walk-up cars run, and the last city bus leaves around 5 pm. A pre-booked shared seat won’t rescue you either. Shared airport seats operate on scheduled departures, so check Wizzride’s booking page for the last available service on your travel date. If your flight arrives after the available departures, pre-book a private cab or consider staying overnight in Guwahati.

You have two sound choices:

  • Pre-book a private cab and share your flight number.
  • Sleep in Guwahati and leave in the morning.

The second costs a hotel night, but it saves you a three-hour hill drive after a long day. Rain can slow that road too. Booking one of the hotels near Guwahati Airport keeps the night simple, and recent guest reviews are worth a look because standards vary. Choose by how tired you will be. Travelling solo? Should You Fly Into Shillong Instead?

Yes, Shillong has its own airport at Umroi, about 30 to 35 km from the city, depending on the source. Flights are limited. Some sources also mention a helicopter link from Guwahati. Check current schedules before you plan around either one. For most travellers, Guwahati plus a road transfer is still the easier bet.

Your Ride to Shillong, Sorted

About three hours of winding road, and then the hills open up. Captured by our team member on the way to Shillong.

That’s the whole route, from arrivals to the hills. Shared seats suit solo travellers landing by day. Private cabs suit groups, heavy bags and any evening or night landing. The bus can work for travellers with light luggage and time to spare. Goibibo lists a direct airport service around 11 am for approximately ₹500, while city buses start from around ₹200 but require an extra transfer into Guwahati. Check the schedule for your travel date before relying on either option.

Before you pay, ask two things: is the fare per seat or per car, and where exactly will you be dropped? Fares shift, so confirm with your operator too.

Then settle in. About three hours of winding road, and the hills take over from there. Shillong is waiting.

Pack Your Bags, Not Your Doubts: Quick Answers

What is the taxi fare from Guwahati Airport to Shillong?
A private car usually starts around ₹2,500 and can pass ₹4,500 for larger vehicles. The vehicle and the time of year you book both matter. A pre-booked shared seat starts at about ₹900. Travelling as a group of four? Do the sum before you pick, because a private sedan can come out cheaper than four shared seats.

How long does the journey take?
Plan for about three hours. Rain and traffic on the hill road can stretch that, especially in the monsoon months, so don’t book a tight commitment for the same evening you land. Our Northeast monsoon travel guide explains what the wet season means for your plans.

Is there a train to Shillong?
No, there isn’t. Shillong has no railway station, so any train journey ends in Guwahati, about 100 km away. The last stretch has to be done by road, and that’s exactly why choosing the right ride from the airport matters.

Is Uber available from Guwahati to Shillong?
Sometimes, yes. Intercity rides do show up on Uber for this route, but we wouldn’t build a plan around them. The price climbs when demand does, and you can’t know how many cars are free until you’ve landed. If one turns up, great. If not, you’ll want that pre-booked cab or shared seat waiting as a fallback.

Are shared taxis available at night?
Don’t count on it. Walk-up shared cars are unreliable after dark, and pre-booked shared airport seats follow fixed departures, so check the last one listed for your date. A late arrival could find you waiting at the kerb for a seat that never comes. If you land in the evening, pre-book a private cab and sort your ride before you leave the plane.

Is there public transport from the airport?
Yes, but only a little. Goibibo lists one daytime MTC bus from the airport at about 11 am, from around ₹500. ASTC also runs an airport bus to Paltan Bazar, at roughly ₹100 to ₹150, from where you can take a city bus or sumo onward. Other government buses leave from Guwahati city, roughly between 7 am and 5 pm, from about ₹200. If you miss the airport bus, give yourself extra time to reach the city first.
